Discussion Panel: “Building sustainable and resilient Communities through travel and volunteerism” with Brennan Lagasse and Paige Viren, PhD. Moderated by Galina Fedorova
Brennan Lagasse is the sustainability program chair at Sierra Nevada College located in Lake Tahoe, NV. He has also worked as a freelance journalist and professional expedition ski guide for many years. His research and personal scholarship has focused on a framework of Holistik Sustainability with a particular focus on the Arctic Refuge protection movement, a jewel of the circumpolar north located in northeastern Alaska.
Viren has been conducting research for over 15 years in tourism, more specifically in consumer behavior and tourism, specializing in adventure travel and sustainable community-based tourism I rural communities. She works closely with the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) to examine traveler trends and industry issues contributing to the ongoing evolution of the sector. In 2018, ATTA published a revised definition of adventure travel based on Dr. Viren’s research. In addition to her pioneering work with the commercial adventure travel industry, Dr. Viren has extensive experience working with rural communities; developing sustainable local tourism focused on economic diversification, protecting and enhancing the natural, cultural, and historic resources.
Galina Fedorova is an avid adventure traveler, skier and cyclist. She climbed mountains in Greenland, Antarctica, Chile and many other places.

Keynote: Ge Wang, Stanford University: "Music, Technology, People: A Story of Artful Design"
How might the shaping of technology make our lives richer and more
meaningful? This presentation (with live demos) is a journey through the
design of everyday tools, musical instruments, games, and social
experiences. It is a story and contemplation on how we shape technology
-- and how technology, in turn, shapes us and our society.
About the speaker: Ge Wang is an Associate Professor at Stanford University in Music and
Computer Science. He researches artful design of tools, toys, games and
social experiences. Ge is the architect of the ChucK music programming
language, director of the Stanford Laptop Orchestra, co-founder of Smule
and designer of the Ocarina and Magic Piano apps for mobile phones. He
is a 2016 Guggenheim Fellow and the author of Artful Design: Technology in Search of
the Sublime, a comic book about design, technology, art, and life.
